The Human Rights Campaigns page focuses on legislative proposals to advance the human rights of people experiencing homelessness at local, state and national levels.
At present, a proposal is moving forward in Broward County toward amending the county’s Human Rights Act to include homeless individuals.
In Florida, through our alliance with other advocates across the state, we are organizing toward seeing a Homeless Bill of Rights introduced in the state legislature in 2017.
We also are organizing toward seeing an amendment to Florida’s Hate Crimes Reporting Act. While homeless persons gained protection in 2010 under the state’s Hate Crimes statute, the accompanying act that mandates reporting of crimes against the other various categories protected under the statute was not also amended. Whether this was due to an oversight on the part of the bill’s sponsors or some other reason we don’t know. But it needs to be changed.
